Birchville Cat Motel is a long-running project of one of the most ambitious and unique noise artists of the world. The New Zealander has certainly got a lot of attention recently for his work with Black Boned Angel and Birchville Cat Motel. Although he is involved in countless other projects like Ming, With Throats As Fine As Needles, Lugosi, etc but BCM is definitely the real deal and is the buzz among the avant-garde music lovers.
And his 2007 work Astro Catastrophies is considered by many as his best one. Coming in a 3xCD-R pack, This is one hell of a record. The triple-disc set Astro Catastrophies (Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, 2007) introduced a heavier sound, as if Kneale was trying to remix doom metal. The first track "Sublime Prince Of The Royal Secret" starts off things with an otherworldly soundtrack which gives the impression of a secret kingdom unveiling before the eyes. Second track "Driving Golden Dopamine" continues this with a ritualistic and mysterious feeling driving the listener to new depths of obscurity. Disc I ends in a right tone with "Divinity Soldiers" that has a nice sludge doom vibe to it.
Disc II starts with "Damn Infinity Hairtie II", which has a nice rhythm going with a repeatedly low drone riff. Damn Infinity Hairtie and Four Freckle Constellation are probably the best songs of the album. Disc III kicks off with "We Flare into Scarlet", having beautiful noise intro with nice variations drawing on the listener with its blissful and spiritual feeling. Subtle organ melodies and hidden traditional instruments float beautifully in an aura of black haze. Above all, this is really a work of noise and avant-garde art of epic proportions. Highly recommended for psychedelic noise fans!!!
